Detailed Guide
Step 1: Adjusting Password Length
Use the large slider at the top of the Settings section. Drag it left or right to select any length between 6 and 64 characters.
The current length is shown in a badge above the password display and updates live as you move the slider.
Tip: For most accounts, 16 characters is an excellent balance of security and usability. Use 24+ characters for high-value accounts like banking or email.
Step 2: Selecting Character Types
Four toggle cards control what goes into your password:
Uppercase (A–Z)
Recommended for almost every password.
Lowercase (a–z)
Included by default in nearly all cases.
Numbers (0–9)
Adds important entropy and variety.
Symbols (!@#$%…)
Greatly increases strength. Include when possible.
At least one character type must be selected. Passly will warn you if none are chosen.
Step 3: Using Advanced Options
Below the character toggles you’ll find two important checkboxes:
- Exclude similar characters — Removes confusing characters like 0, O, 1, l, I
- Exclude ambiguous — Removes symbols that can be hard to read or type (such as {} [] / \)
These options make passwords easier to type manually when needed while still keeping them very secure.
Step 4: Understanding Strength & Stats
Passly instantly evaluates every password you generate:
- Strength bar — Shows a visual score from Weak to Very Strong
- Strength label — “Very Strong”, “Strong”, “Good”, “Fair”, or “Weak”
- Entropy — A numeric measure of randomness (higher is better)
- Crack time — Estimated time it would take a hacker to crack the password
Passwords are always generated locally in your browser — nothing is ever sent to any server.
Step 5: Quick Presets & History
Use the Quick Presets buttons (12, 16, 24, 32 characters) for instant commonly recommended lengths.
Every password you generate is saved in the “Recent Passwords” list at the bottom. You can:
- Click any entry to instantly load it back into the generator
- Copy directly from the list
- Clear the entire history when you’re done

- Always use at least 16 characters for important accounts
- Include all four character types whenever the site allows it

Troubleshooting
- Password not strong enough? → Increase length or enable more character types (especially symbols).
- Too many similar characters? → Enable “Exclude similar characters”.
- Password won’t generate? → Make sure at least one character type is selected.
- History disappeared? → History is stored only in your browser. Clearing site data will remove it.
